Lynchburg still is working to get copies of the Freedom of Information Act to its volunteer boards and commissions after concluding its past education efforts had been hit or miss.

“I would say they were mostly miss,” said City Manager Kimball Payne, noting the city had no uniform approach for training new board appointees until this year. “… We’re trying to raise that consciousness.”

U.S. Supreme Court takes up VA law denying non-Virginians right to FOIA requests

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on Friday that it will hear the appeal of Mark J. McBurney and Roger W. Hurlbert, both non-Virginians. McBurney and Hurlbert were denied Freedom of Information (FOI) requests for government documents because Virginia law prohibits non-Virginians from using the Freedom of Information Act law.
