From the Editor: Most candidates agree SD needs more openness

Open government is a constant theme in South Dakota, for both good strides and glaring omissions.

Last month, the South Dakota Newspaper Association sent open government surveys to all legislative and statewide candidates, except those running for U.S. House and Senate. Of 182 surveys sent, about 105 were returned, according to the association.

Mitchell Daily Republic wins case against Huron (S.D.) schools

From Mitchell Daily Republic:  HURON — A copy of a secret agreement that directed nearly $175,000 to an ex-superintendent of the Huron School District must be provided to The Daily Republic, a judge ruled Wednesday.

In a four-page decision, Third Circuit Judge Jon Erickson said the district must release a copy of the settlement agreement between it and ex-superintendent Ross Opsal.

New SD law opens all public employee contracts

From The Daily Republic:

A new state law will make all public employee contracts open records beginning July 1, a move some officials said is a good step toward open government in South Dakota.

Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed the bill on Friday. It requires the disclosure of all public employee contracts, no matter where the documents are placed.
