Open data can help you even if you know nothing about data, because it can power tools and resources that are usable by anyone.

This was on clear display recently at TransportationCamp, an unconference that focuses on the intersection of transportation and technology. Several developers from Mapzen ran a session presenting some of the open-source mapping tools they’ve been working on recently.

NYC: Open Data Compliance the Focus at Oversight Hearing

The New York City Council’s Committee on Technology held an oversight hearing Tuesday to evaluate the progress being made by the city in tracking compliance by government agencies with the city’s open data law.

The Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics (MODA) has been conducting what is essentially an audit, the “Examination and Verification Plan,” to gauge each agency’s status regarding its publication of required data sets on the Open Data Portal, an online access point meant to open government to the public.

How private contractors are taking over data in the public domain

Government agencies, in many instances, have given contractors exclusive rights to the data. The government then removes it from public view online or never posts the data, laws and documents that are considered public information.

Public datasets that state and local governments are handing off to private contractors include court records and judicial opinions; detailed versions of state and local laws and, in some cases, the laws themselves; building codes and standards; and public university graduation records.

Government Requests For Facebook User Data Up 27 Percent

The latest transparency report from Facebook, released on Wednesday, reveals a considerable uptick in requests from governments around the world during the first half of 2016.

According to figures from Facebook, government requests for user data from the social network jumped from 46,710 in the first half of 2015 to 59,229 in the first half of 2016, representing a 27 percent increase.

U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Joins Forces with data.world to Launch Data.mil

data.world today announced that it has partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense to launch Data.mil, a new experiment in Defense Open Data created by the Defense Digital Service (DDS) in collaboration with data owners throughout the U.S. military.

Unveiled today by the Pentagon, Data.mil makes open data available in a searchable, machine-readable, downloadable format. Through its partnership with data.world, Data.mil also offers a collaborative workspace for this groundbreaking dataset to invite and facilitate collaboration, targeted analysis and discussion.
