Denial of newspaper’s FOIA request confirms investigation into health department

Federal investigators appear to be looking into actions of the recently dissolved Ford-Iroquois Public Health Department. Responding to a tip, the Paxton Record filed a Freedom of Information Act request on Sept. 5 seeking the disclosure of any federal subpoenas for records that Iroquois County had received relating to the bi-county health department.

Consumer Group Loses FOIA Fight with Drugmakers

A consumer rights advocacy group has lost a Freedom of Information Act fight to access the compliance records Pfizer Inc. and Purdue Pharma LP filed with the government as part of their settlement of health care fraud cases.
 
U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell of the District of Columbia agreed with the pharmaceutical companies and HHS that the records were exempt under FOIAís exemption for trade secrets and confidential commercial, financial information.
 

Over 500 grievous injuries or deaths at VA hospitals in 2013

Veterans Affairs hospitals across the country reported more than 500 incidents last year where patients were gravely injured or died as a result of the care they received.

Data obtained by the Washington Free Beacon through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) shows 575 “institutional disclosures of adverse events”—the bureaucratic phrase for reporting a serious mistake—at VA hospitals in fiscal year 2013.

State gets ‘F’ for lack of public info on medical care

Connecticut is one of 41 states to earn a failing grade from health advocates for lacking public information about the quality of care provided by doctors.

"Consumers should be able to find out if their local primary care physician is delivering good quality care without having to go through hoops," said Francois de Brantes, executive director of the Health Care Incentives Improvement Institute in Newtown, which published the report. "Connecticut has no public reporting of physician quality."
