Reporters and editors love to complain about government secrecy. Closed meetings and redacted documents make it harder for us to do our jobs. Even when the law is on our side, too many agencies and officials stonewall.
We hope the public supports media efforts to shine a light on the business of government. But know this: Pushing for openness in government is not about making life easier for reporters; it’s about you being able to hold your government accountable and maintaining the trust that’s needed between public bodies and the people they serve.
