A new state law will make all public employee contracts open records beginning July 1, a move some officials said is a good step toward open government in South Dakota.
Gov. Dennis Daugaard signed the bill on Friday. It requires the disclosure of all public employee contracts, no matter where the documents are placed.

It sounds like it could have been written by Occupy Seattle protesters. Or maybe by the tea party. But the statement actually accompanied a ballot measure that Washington voters passed back in 1972.

Hillside Police Department must turn over a 2002 police report describing the arrest of Emanuel “Chris” Welch for domestic battery, the Illinois attorney general ordered Friday.
Forest Leaves has been seeking the report since January, but Hillside police refused a Freedom of Information Act request, saying there was no arrest and that the matter was private.
