The Freeh report on the Jerry Sandusky Penn State sex abuse scandal makes many recommendations on how the whole rotten mess might be avoided in the future, including transforming the very culture of the university. Sadly, the report fails to recommend a tangible key change that might have exposed the problems and protected children years ago.

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey has filed a lawsuit arguing that the state Attorney General's Office is breaking the law by refusing to release records concerning topics ranging from state police overtime to investigative procedures.

N.H. judge grants Union Leader access to name of fire victim

A New Hampshire judge ruled last week that Union Leader Corp., publisher of the Granite State's largest daily, should be given the name of a man suspected of starting a fire while smoking in a Laconia apartment complex. The city of Laconia argued that federal and state privacy laws precluded such disclosure.

Jacksonville (Fla.) plans to start saving text messages

The City Ethics Commission Subcommittee on Transparency and Open Government met Monday to discuss how to capture and preserve text messages.

"The first area of concern was whether or not text messages, which are public record if they are discussing City business on either City or personal phones, are being kept," said James Young, a member of the City Ethics Commission.
