From D.C. Open Government Coalition:
Celebrating Sunshine Week 2013, the D.C. Open Government Coalition will present its second annual “D.C. Open Government Summit” Wednesday, March 13.
The D.C. OGC will share results of its recent open meetings audit, surveying compliance across dozens of D.C. boards and commissions. Robert Spagnoletti, chairman of the newly established Board of Ethics and Government Accountability which oversees the not-yet-established D.C. Open Government Office, will join us for a discussion about the audit. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) will join for a question-answer session on the state of transparency in D.C. government. Finally, the event will feature a conversation with V. David Zvenyach, general counsel to the D.C. Council, regarding the Council’s recent settlement with the D.C. OGC of FOIA litigation over access to Councilmembers’ emails.
We encourage the public to join us, ask questions and share observations and recommendations regarding open government in the District.
The D.C. Open Government Coalition works to enhance the public’s access to government information and ensure the transparency in the D.C. government. The event is co-sponsored by the National Press Club’s Freedom of the Press Committee, the Society of Professional Journalists, D.C. Professional Chapter and American University School of Communication, Journalism Division.
Sunshine Week is a national initiative to promote a dialogue on the importance of open government and freedom of information. This non-partisan, non-profit initiative is celebrated in mid-March each year to coincide with James Madison’s birthday on March 16. For more, visit www.sunshineweek.org.
