The Loveland Police Department quietly encrypted its radio traffic in October, the latest in a growing trend of law enforcement agencies in the region making their scanners inaccessible to the public.
The department did not notify the public or the media that it encrypted scanner traffic. Jan Burreson, a spokesperson for the department, said that the decision to encrypt was made out of a concern for officer safety.
The department has had incidents where criminals, especially burglars, have used the scanner to monitor police action, he said. Privacy for officers and victims also became a concern in the digital age, where most people have the ability to listen in on scanner traffic, he said. (Read more here…)
