What is covered and not covered by open government and meetings laws can vary widely by state and can sometimes be confusing. Many NFOIC member coalitions provide training seminars on open government laws applicable in their states. The training can be particularly helpful for newly elected or appointed public officials as they take on their new responsibilities.
In some states, the training is provided by lawyers well versed in the laws and experienced in issues ranging from meeting notifications and exceptions to FOI requirements to requirements governing executive sessions and access to electronic records.
