From The Florida Current: Old friends, students and political admirers of former Gov. Reubin Askew gathered at Florida's historic Old Capitol Monday for a warm tribute to his more than 60 years of work to improve the civil rights, ethics and open government climate of the state capital.<
"No one ever said government has all the answers," Askew told about 80 well-wishers, who included Florida State University President Eric Barron, Tallahassee Mayor John Marks and Senate President Don Gaetz, R-Niceville. "What government has is the responsibility to bring people together who know what they are talking about."

Gaetz recalled that as governor, Askew refused to join the anti-busing resistance many other Southern states engaged in 40 years ago. He also led the state's first successful petition campaign for a constitutional amendment, gathering voter signatures to pass the "sunshine amendment," requiring financial disclosure by public officeholders.
