Over four days, The Republic has reported on deaths in Arizona's prison system from suicides, drug overdoses, medical neglect and murder.When an inmate dies in one of Arizona's 15 state prisons, including the five run by private contractors, the deaths are examined by an internal Department of Corrections investigator. Within a few days of each death, the department issues a brief notification listing the inmate's name, age, crime, sentence, date and location of death, and whether the death was from natural causes, an accident, homicide or suicide, or under investigation.The Republic used Arizona's Public Records Law to request Corrections records in 46 inmate deaths since July 1, 2010, that either were listed as under investigation or did not list a cause of death.
